England squad named

A couple of weeks ago the England football team received a new manager Roy Hodgson. Now Roy has named his team for euro 2012.

The big news is that Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has not been selected due to what Hodgson described as a football one. Other players left out are Tottenham’s Kyle Walker and Manchester City’s Micah Richards.

Steven Gerrard will be captain and ex captain John Terry is also in the squad. Despite having no caps, Norwich keeper John Ruddy has been selected alongside Joe Hart and Robert Green.

Hodgson said Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Phil Jones were included because of their ability to play in several different positions.

Wayne Rooney is in the squad even though he will miss out on the first two matches due to suspension.

The squad:

GOALKEEPERS

• Robert Green (West Ham United)

• Joe Hart (Manchester City)

• John Ruddy (Norwich City)

DEFENDERS

• Leighton Baines (Everton)

• Gary Cahill (Chelsea)

• Ashley Cole (Chelsea)

• Glen Johnson (Liverpool)

• Phil Jones (Manchester United)

• Joleon Lescott (Manchester City)

• John Terry (Chelsea)

MIDFIELDERS

• Gareth Barry (Manchester City)

• Stewart Downing (Liverpool)

• Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

• Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

• James Milner (Manchester City)

• Scott Parker (Tottenham Hotspur)

• Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal)

• Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

• Ashley Young (Manchester United)

FORWARDS

• Andy Carroll (Liverpool)

• Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

• Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United)

• Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur)

Dalglish fired

Kenny Dalglish has been fired from Liverpool Football Club today after leading Liverpool to their worst season for over 50 years.

Despite winning the Carling Cup, Liverpool failed to win the FA cup and finished 8th in the league. Owner John Henry praised Dalglish for his place in Liverpool’s history but said it was time to start looking for a new manager. He said: “Kenny will always be more than a championship winning manager, more than a championship winning star player. He is in many ways the heart and soul of the club.

“He has always put the Club and its supporters first. Kenny will always be a part of the family at Anfield.

So who will take the new job? One of the names is Roberto Martinez but who do you think?

This Sunday was the last day of the Premier League and had all 20 teams playing. The last day would decide the winner, the final team to get relegated and the Europa and Champions League places.

Let’s start with the top of the table with both clubs in Manchester battling it out, United were playing Sunderland at the stadium of light while City were playing QPR at home. Both teams were on the same amount of points and the table looked like this:

Position

Team

Points

Played

Goal Difference

1.

Manchester City

86

37

63

2.

Manchester United

86

37

55

The first goal was scored by Rooney putting United top of the league for the time being but just before half time Man City scored with Zabaletta putting City top. Soon after the break Cisse equalised for QPR just before his teammate Joey Barton got sent off for a clash with Teves. On his way out Joey kneed Sergio Aguero in the back of the leg and attempted to headbutt Vincent Kompany.

Jamie Mackie next silenced the Etihad with a far post header on the 66th minute meaning that City would need to score two if they wanted to win the title. 25 minutes later the full time whistle blew at Sunderland with the final score 1-0, United thought they had won the title but they were in for a shock. City scored two injury time goals with Dzeko and Aguero on the score sheet. The whistle seconds later blew giving City their first title since 1968.

Meanwhile Arsenal had just secured there champions league place finishing third but Tottenham despite coming fourth may not play next year if Chelsea win the champions league next week. Alan Pardew and Newcastle just missed out on a place in the champions league but will play in the Europa alongside Chelsea and Liverpool.

Even though QPR lost, because Bolton drew with Stoke it’s Bolton that will go down with Blackburn and Wolves who haven’t won in 10 games.

So there is lots of questions that still remain unanswered like will Mancini go buy more players or will he keep the one he’s got?

On Tuesday 8th May children from Class 2 and 3 at Willoughton Primary School were visited by a theatre company and were given the challenge of making a play in a day. The performance would be shown to friends and family at the end of the school day.

This term Class 3 has been learning about the topics of the Greeks, and Greek myths and legends. The drama workshop taught us a little bit more about the Greeks but in a really fun way. The day started with a little warm up and then the parts were given to the class. The rest of the day was spent rehearsing before it would all be brought together.

Making a play in a day was very scary to do because there wasn’t much time so everyone had to work as a team. The children started in small groups and eventually came together to put on the big play. Everyone had to help one another to learn lines because it would be performed to an audience later that day.

We asked some children from Class 2 what did they enjoyed the most, and Liam said, “I really enjoyed all of the games that we played.” Tabitha said, “I loved acting the play out at the end of the day.”

Lilly said, “I liked saying ‘Lets chase Mrs Popplewell round school with a stick’ and then say ‘only joking’”.

The workshop leader explained, “It’s about more than producing a play in a day, its about building confidence and increasing self esteem. The children will work together as a team and it will hopefully help the team’s concentration and focus.”

Class 2 and 3 know more about Ancient Greece now and know more about myths and legends. As a whole the day was exciting and amazing and hopefully we will be able to do it again in the future.

A couple of month’s back 70000 people auditioned with the same dream, to become the “Britain’s Got Talent” winner. This weekend the final took place with a surprising winner.

Ashleigh and Pudsey on Saturday were crowned winners of the show and won half a million pounds (£500,000) as well as a performance in front of the Queen. They are the first dog winners in the 6 years the show’s been running.

In their audition the judges were very impressed and put them through to the semi-final where they won the public’s vote sending them through to the final.

As the other semi finals went on the finalists were decided. They were: Ashleigh and Pudsey, Only Boys Aloud, Jonathan and Charlotte, Aquabatique, Molly Rainford, Sam Kelly, Ryan O’Shaughnessy, Loveable Rogues, Kai and Natalia, Nu Sxool and a wild card act The Mend.

All of them performed really well but Ashleigh and Pudsey shone out to many. So it was down to the public to decide the winner while the two guest acts performed, Susan Boyle and Diversity.

Soon Ant and Dec welcomed out all the acts and revealed the top 3, Ashleigh and Pudsey, Jonathon and Charlotte and Only Boys Aloud. With Only Boys Aloud coming third Jonathon and Charlotte coming second and Ashleigh and Pudsey winning. As they performed once more a thought crossed many’s mind. What will the dog spend his half a million pounds on (put your suggestions below)?

Earlier today four teams battled their way to try and go into the final at Twickenham; the games were brilliant! The matches were Harlequins v Northampton Saints and Leicester Tigers v Saracens the final scores were 25-23 to Harlequins and 24-15 to Leicester.

The only try scorers in the Saracens v Leicester match were: Steve Mafi and Alesana Tuilangi both Leicester players. Man of the match was Gorge Ford the nineteen year old who has really shined for the Tigers lately, Leicester’s director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “George is a very good player, and always brings a spark into the team.”Last season Saracens thrashed Leicester in the Aviva Premiership Final which, put pressure on the Tigers but they managed to pull it of. Sadly Alesana’s try was his last for Leicester after signing up to move to Japan a massive loss for the Tigers.

In the Harlequins v Northampton Saints game the try scorers were: Lee Dickson and Joe Marler both from different teams. This match was closer than the other game due to lots of penalty kicking from both sides. With a few minutes to spare Joe Marler crossed the line to win the game with help from his forwards.

So the 2012 Aviva Premiership final will be Harlequins v Leicester Tigers at Twickenham on 26th May 2012 don’t miss it!

This is because lots of deaths have been caused by people taking shortcuts and walking along railway tracks.

Network Rail estimate that there are more than 28 million trespassing incidents every year on the railway and 11 million are committed by under 16’s.

Around 60 people are killed every year and many more are badly injured. CCTV footage shows people having very close brushes with incoming trains.

It is hoped that the campaign will stop people walking across railways in the future.

Wenlock and Mandeville are the Olympic and Paralympic mascots for London 2012. The story of how they were made says that they were created from two metal blobs from a steel factory.

They fell off of a girder that was being made for the Olympic stadium and they were just two blobs on the floor. A man called George picked them up and took them home on his retirement day. He operated on them and made them into two metal figures.

In the morning he gave them to his grandchildren and a magical rainbow came and turned them real. The children decided that their names were Wenlock and Mandeville. They then rode on the rainbow to the Olympics.

The mascot are excited for the Olympics and will be there to celebrate with everyone. During the Olympics Wenlock and Mandeville will be watching every second of the games, and capturing moments by taking photos with the cameras that are built into their eyes.

New technology has been developed to create a car that drives itself! The new driverless car system has been made and produced by Google.

They used Google maps with radar connected to the internet and would use Google maps to tell where the car is going.

It is only allowed to drive in Nevada in America for now.

It took 15 engineers to get the self-driving car working for Google. It cost about 2 million US dollars to get the internet the radar, the car itself and the tools to get it working.

Google have made a fleet of 8 vehicles using its system of sensors. The system has an override which allows the driver to take control of the car by hitting the break or steering the wheel and all the manual stuff.

It also has a special cruise control like any other manual cars.

In the future the driverless car may be allowed to be used in other states like California and possibly the rest of America.

Recently, pupils from Millfield Primary got to explore Salt Mill’s exciting exhibition of David Hockney’s iPad art. David, a 74 year old, has been doing art for many years and shows no sign of stopping!

Lots of people liked the exhibition, one lady commented: “It was very interesting and I loved the art.”

A Millfield pupil commented: “It was OK, but it’s not for me.”

David began experimenting with drawing on his iPhone in 2008, later adding an iPad to his drawing box.

The application that he uses is often thought of as for children, but adults love it too! The app gives the user tools to create anything they want.

“The iPad is like an endless piece of paper that perfectly fitted the feeling I had that painting should be big,” he told the Guardian’s Nick Wroe.

A Guardian reader commented: “The iPad, when used with a stylus, is the first piece of technology that feels good to paint on. I’ve been a graphic designer for nearly 25 years and have used all sorts of Macs, tablets etc but only the iPad represents real progress.

David became an artist by attending Bradford College and the Royal College of Art in London.

He’s taught at Universities of Lowa, Colorado and California.

He has published several series of graphic works in book form and has also demonstrated his versatility by designing for opera and ballet.

Snooze, eat, drink, snooze, eat, drink, snooze, eat, drink…

Pets love to think of food as luxury, but have you ever heard the expression, ‘Ah, you’re spoiling the poor thing!’

Well, these pets definitely haven’t. The proof’s in the pudding! Literally! These two pork-pies are just 2 of the 18 competitors in the PDSA’s new get fit scheme – for pets. The 11 dogs, 5 cats and 2 rabbits will leave their roly-poly lives behind, and spend the next eight months on a strict diet and exercise regime, ready for the final ‘Fat-Off’ at the end of their time.

But, their lives won’t be all doom and gloom, as the prize at the end of November will be a stay in a pet-friendly hotel, and, don’t tell, a year’s supply of food!

Many experts believe that the reason so many pets are so huge is the fact that their owners pamper them. The owners seem to believe that they are doing it for the animal’s own good, but in fact the only thing they are doing is making the poor pet bloated.

However, overfeeding is a fatal case in rodents such as guinea pigs. Guinea pigs have a vulnerable stomach, as they do not understand when to stop: consequently, they eat and eat until they become too bloated and die.

This way it is up to the owners to work out quite how much is too much!

So next time your pet starts calling for food, imagine poor old Maverick and Fifi! Are you already starting to see the resemblance?!
